Maritime Services Building
(Museum of Contemporary Art)
Sydney, New South Wales

Winter 2001 - Preservation News
Disturbing news from the Harbour City. One of Sydney's most prominent Art Deco buildings is the old Maritime Services Building which currently houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. This fine example of Deco architecture, constructed from local sandstone, is located at Circular Quay. The Mayor of Sydney is leading a push to replace the Sydney landmark with yet another office/cinema complex. This outrageous proposal is being strongly opposed by our colleagues in NSW and globally via the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies. Let's hope the people of Sydney rally behind those opposed to the demolition. The latest news is that Green Bans have been placed on the building by the union movement. Hopefully the bans will be as effective as those imposed in the 70s, which ensured the preservation of many of Sydney's historic buildings and precincts.
