Following Heritage Tasmania's recent recommendation that Portside (the former Burnie Technical School) be added to the Tasmanian Heritage Register in its entirety, the owners, the Burnie Council, have declared the outcome undemocratic (!) and are currently deciding whether to appeal the decision.

Heritage Tasmania recently recommended that Portside (the former Burnie Technical School) would be added to the Tasmanian Heritage Register in its entirety. However, the recommendation was subject to comment by interested parties, including owners of the property (the Burnie Council) who are seeking demolition. We are now awaiting the outcome of the appeal process.

After an extensive review, Heritage Tasmania advises that Portside will be added to the Tasmanian Heritage Register in its entirety. This represents a significant victory for ADS and a group of dedicated Burnie residents, and hopefully will inform local government in Tasmania about the processes to be followed when dealing with public land.
Autumn 2007 - Preservation News
The proposed demolition of the former Burnie Technical School (now called Portside) has been averted after concerted opposition by ADS, members of ICADS and local members of the community. The property developer has withdrawn his Land Use Application that would have resulted in demolition and, for the moment, the building will continue to serve the community as home for a number of small businesses and community groups. Its future is by no means secure, but a pleasing sign is that the Council has engaged a heritage architect to assess the building.
September 2007
ADS nominated the Portside building for listing on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. Advice received is that it will be listed but not to the extent that was sought.
