APRIL 2006 - Preservation News

The proposed re-development of Smith Street, Collingwood was "called in" by the Minister for Planning and referred to a Planning Development Panel. The PDP approved the project, subject to some "tweaking" of the plans. Completion of the project will result in the restoration of the facade of the Coles Store at 172 Smith St.

SUMMER 2005 - Preservation News

ADS has been advised by the City of Yarra that the proposed massive 200 apartment redevelopment in Smith Street, Collingwood, has been put 'on hold'.

The development would have resulted in the demolition of the original Coles Store #1, designed by Harry Norris.

SPRING 2004 - Preservation News

The Collingwood Action Group (CAG), supported by the City of Yarra, the National Trust, and ADS, is continuing its battle to preserve historic buildings in Smith St, Collingwood.

A massive development would result in demolition of a number of buildings, including the Coles No 1 store updated to a design by Harry Norris.

ADS has carried out research on other former Coles stores in suburbs including Carnegie, Moonee Ponds, Preston and St Kilda, a number of which are in surprisingly intact condition.

WINTER 2004 - Preservation News

Another Harry Norris building is under threat! As part of a proposed massive 200-apartment redevelopment in Smith Street, Collingwood, the original Coles Store #1 would be demolished. Norris was the architect for the Coles family and was responsible for design of new stores and re-modeling existing stores.

ADS is working with the National Trust and the Collingwood Action Group to preserve the store.
