Following the announcement by the Myer department store of the proposed demolition of Lonsdale, one of Melbourne’s most iconic Art Deco buildings, the building was nominated by ADS to the Victorian Heritage Register but was unsuccessful. ADS has requested a review of the decision, with a hearing scheduled for October.
David Jones Store, Bourke Street (Winter 2008)
As reported in Summer 2008, the David Jones (DJs) organisation has provided a lead to other owners of historic city buildings by nominating their three Bourke Street buildings to the Victorian Heritage Register (H2153 and H2154). Following Heritage Tasmania’s recent recommendation that Portside (the former Burnie Technical School) be added to the Tasmanian Heritage Register in its entirety, the owners, the Burnie Council, have declared the outcome undemocratic (!) and are currently deciding whether to appeal the decision.

This former Cable Car building in Fitzroy was the subject of a review by the Historic Buildings Council to examine whether it should be included on the Victorian Heritage Register. Although a demolition permit has been granted by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the distinctive Fitzroy building has been nominated to the Victorian Heritage Register. A hearing was conducted by the Historic Buildings Council in May and we await the outcome.

Lonsdale House was recently nominated by ADS to the Victorian Heritage Register. However, Heritage Victoria has advised that nomination has been unsuccessful. ADS has th eopportunity to make further representations concerning the non-recommendation.
Taroona Hotel, Channel Highway, Taroona (Summer 2008)
Another major battle fought in Tasmania was the retention of the Taroona Hotel, near Hobart. Whilst originally planning to demolish the hotel (c. 1949), the owners eventually agreed to incorporate it into the proposed develpopment and work has been steadily progressing.
