Myer Melbourne, Bourke Street and Lonsdale Street, Melbourne (Winter 2006)
As reported previously, the Myer complex has been recommended for inclusion on the Victorian Heritage Register. However, as expected, the new owners of Myer have lodged an objection to the listing. A hearing will be conducted in September, when the details of their objection will be revealed.
Garden Ave, East Melbourne (Winter 2006)
The 3-storey former boarding house, Islanders Place (located on the corner of Wellington Parade and Garden Avenue), is now being converted to serviced apartments. Municipal Olympic Pool, Maryborough (April 2006)
Following a grant from Heritage Victoria, work was conducted to restore and re-paint the Pool complex. The change rooms were re-painted in original colours of green and cream. An official launch of the upgraded complex is expected soon.
Smith Street, Collingwood (April 2006)
The proposed re-development of Smith Street, Collingwood was “called in” by the Minister for Planning and referred to a Planning Development Panel. The PDP approved the project, subject to some “tweaking” of the plans. Completion of the project will result in the restoration of the facade of the Coles Store at 172 Smith St.
Rivoli Theatre, Camberwell Rd, Camberwell (April 2006)
In 2005, the Rivoli Theatre at 200 Camberwell Road was added to the Heritage Register for the State of Victoria (H1524). Main Hall, Northcote Town Hall, Northcote (April 2006)
Re-modelling of the stage in the main hall at the Northcote Town Hall has been completed and the hall is now accessible from the stage. The space has been re-painted and cleared of stored furniture.
Middle Brighton Baths, The Esplanade, Middle Brighton (April 2006)
Fully-renovated and opened as a complex of restaurants and cafes in 2003. The enclosed baths and the gymnasium are still operational within the complex. The restoration of the baths provided the catalyst for the rejuvenation of the adjacent area.
Grand Hotel, Mt Alexander Rd, Essendon (April 2006)
The conversion to apartments is complete. The former hotel is now the frontispiece for an extensive residential and serviced apartment block.
Collingwood TAFE, (former Collingwood Technical College), Johnston St, Collingwood (April 2006)
The City of Yarra has approved plans for adaptive re-use of the site to a community centre. A new entrance will be constructed on the Wellington St side, and the Johnston St entrance will be retained. Council has imposed strict conditions on the works.
